Ruthann Mazé :: East - West ArtsPainting is my passion and my joy.
Over the past 45 years I have explored a variety of surfaces on which to paint.
I began with canvas then paper and now I primarily paint on clay pots and wood.
Asian brushwork forms the foundation of my paintings.
I then apply layer upon layer of patterened papers, carved stampings, colors and textured paint to create a visual balance.
All of these elements are lacquered onto a wood or canvas panel.
In my work I juxtapose elements of the old with the new.
While empty space gives structure to Asian painting heavy
pattern performs the task of framing - as traditional
brocade and fabric once framed the scroll paintings of
ancient times. The feeling of the old is brought into a
contemporary form. Not bound by any school of painting,
I can be more fresh and intuitive with my subjects and process.
Done with bamboo brushes, Sumi-e brushwork is my
method of choice. When I place a stroke, it is a deliberate
statement; there is no fussing. The stroke reveals if it is
hesitant, unsure, or reckless. It has to be just right.
A mental readiness and a spirit of enthusiasm need
to be reached before I can begin to paint. If the artist
doesn't have the proper state of mind the strokes are weak.
My paintings reflect how I feel. They convey a balanced
state of mind. Quiet empty space, controlled but spontaneous
strokes; vibrant colors, texture and pattern - everything is
there. Created with joy, my paintings evoke the same.
